Refugees

Uganda hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world with approximately 1.1 million refugees settled in urban centres and across 28 refugee settlements in the country. And while the number of adult Ugandans accessing formal financial services continues to grow, the figures are much lower in refugee settlement communities.

Programs that create a market for relevant, formal financial products services for refugees and their host communities, and encourage market actors including banks and Fintechs to serve them, will be critical to reduce their vulnerability, enable them to integrate, and empower them to contribute to their local economies.
