Interoperability in Mobile Financial Services in Uganda
Friends Consult Limited (FCL) was commissioned by Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSDU) in collaboration with Bank of Uganda (BoU) to conduct market research on interoperability in mobile financial services in Uganda. Interoperability is defined as the ability for different systems to connect with one another.
It is increasingly seen by digital financial experts, as well as government and development agencies, as a business opportunity; a means of increasing the volume of transactions as well as improving financial inclusion. With regards to East Africa, mobile network operators in Tanzania are implementing interoperability while in Kenya it is expected to commence in the financial year 2017-18. In Uganda, FSDU and BoU are aware of the importance of interoperability, while some mobile money service providers (MMSP) – i.e. Airtel and MTN – are already exploring how they can work together.
