MSE Recovery Fund Resilience and Survivability Report
Resilience and survivability are critical to ensuring the sustainability of enterprises and building coping mechanisms in face of challenges. The Mastercard Foundation, through its implementing partner, Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Uganda, engaged MicroSave Consulting (MSC) to conduct a comprehensive study to investigate the elements and factors influencing MSE resilience and
survivability. The study examined the interplay between the received financial support, external factors such as customer and market dynamics and supply chain networks, and internal organisational dynamics such as operational adaptations, diversification, and innovation.
By employing a mixed methodology, the study unraveled insights into the strategies, adaptations, and factors that have contributed to the resilience of these MSEs. The insights detailed in this report are actionable to enable the Mastercard Foundation, FSD Uganda, partner financial institutions, fund
partners, policymakers, and development practitioners to make informed decisions that support MSEs in building and maintaining their resilience in the face of future uncertainties.
The study identified that beyond receiving financial assistance, MSEs need to enhance their resilience and survivability by developing strategies such as improving their technical skills (business management), managing their finances efficiently, diversifying their sources of revenue, and adopting innovation, among other techniques.
