Interoperability rules for mobile money network
Focus Groups: All
Tools of Impact: Technical Assistance
Achievements: Development of a framework to facilitate the interoperability of mobile money services.
Partners: Bank of Uganda,
Synopsis: Mobile wallet interoperability pricing is a key priority as the largest volume of retail funds move through this channel and it is a pre-requisite to scale up merchant payments in Uganda. Working closely with the Central Bank and CGAP, FSDU supported the development of the interoperability rules. They provided a trust framework to support regulatory compliance. As a result, P2P transactions are now interoperable between MTN, Airtel and UTL. Interoperability provides a foundation for agent & merchant interoperability and reduces overall transaction costs. Specific support included: developing a draft of Scheme Rules for Interoperability between Mobile Money Service Providers and producing a standards document for wallet to wallet (P2P) interoperability.
