Synopsis: As part of stimulation of investments in digital technology, FSD Uganda supported Uganda Telecommunications Limited (UTL) to pilot the Msente Bulk Payments and Collections project that aimed to test an end-to-end solution that addresses these challenges faced by coffee farmers. UTL partnered with Uganda Coffee Farmers Alliance (UCFA) (an apex body established to provide marketing and other support services to coffee farmers’ organizations in Uganda) to facilitate an independent network – Msente Bulk Payments – for rural small coffee-grower households. The pilot project intended to conduct a bulk payments and collection system in which UTL would provide its network agnostic Msente digital financial service to rural coffee farmers in Nakaseke, to facilitate efficient disbursement and collection of funds , to and from their cooperatives.
